What should I know before my first auction?
Come early, register for a bidder number, look over what you want, and set your budget before the bidding starts. That covers most of it. At Venture Group Auction sales across Southwest Missouri, auctioneer Bob Lasswell has been welcoming first-time bidders since 1977, and nobody expects you to know it all on day one.
How do I register to bid?
When you arrive, stop at the registration table. You'll usually need a photo ID, and you'll get a bidder number. That number is how the auctioneer and clerks track what you buy. Keep it handy. You'll hold it up when you win an item.
How does bidding work?
The auctioneer announces an item and calls out a starting amount. If you want to bid, raise your bidder number or your hand so the auctioneer or a ringman sees you. The auctioneer moves the price up in steps. When no one bids higher, the auctioneer says "Sold!" and calls the winning bidder's number.
A few things first-timers worry about:
• Scratching your nose won't buy you a tractor. Auctioneers and ringmen look for clear bids.
• You can ask questions. If you're unsure what's being sold, ask before bidding starts.
• It's okay to stop. Set your top price ahead of time and stick to it.
Top tips for first-time bidders
1. Arrive early to preview items and ask questions.
2. Read the terms of sale. They cover payment, pickup, and any fees.
3. Set a budget for each item you want.
4. Watch a few items sell before you jump in, to get a feel for the pace.
5. Bring a way to haul what you buy, and know the pickup deadline.
6. Pay attention. Items can sell quickly, especially at a big farm or estate sale.
What about buying real estate at auction?
Real estate auctions follow the same basic idea, with a few more steps. Tour the property during the open house, read the terms of sale carefully, and have your financing or proof of funds ready before sale day. The winning bidder usually signs a purchase contract that day and pays a deposit. Real estate auctions are a great way to find homes for sale and land for sale in Newton County and across Southwest Missouri.
What can I find at a Venture Group Auction?
Depending on the sale: farm equipment, tools, vehicles, furniture, antiques, collectibles, homes, land, and acreage. Follow our auction page for upcoming sales across the four-state area.
